Hair Smoothing vs Keratin Treatment: Differences, Results, Cost and Aftercare

Keratin and smoothing are two of the most requested treatments at our hair studio, and the first question is always the same: which one should I get? Both make hair smoother and easier to manage, but they use different chemistry, give different finishes and last for different lengths of time. Choosing the wrong one can leave you disappointed, or with damaged hair. Here is a clear comparison to help you decide.

What a Keratin Treatment Does

Keratin is the protein your hair is made of. When hair is damaged by colouring, heat or sun, gaps form along the hair shaft and the outer cuticle lifts, which causes frizz and roughness. A keratin treatment fills these gaps with a protein-based formula, which the stylist then seals into the hair with a flat iron.

The result is smoother, shinier hair that dries faster and resists humidity. Keratin does not change the internal structure of your hair, so it keeps some of your natural body and movement. Wavy hair becomes looser and more manageable rather than poker straight. Results usually last three to five months and fade gradually as you wash.

What Hair Smoothing Does

Smoothing is a chemical straightening treatment. A cream softens the bonds inside the hair that give it its natural shape. The hair is then straightened with a flat iron and a neutraliser is applied to set the new, straighter shape. It works in a similar way to rebonding, but with a gentler formula and a softer, more natural finish.

Because smoothing changes the structure of the hair itself, the treated hair stays straighter until it grows out. The new growth at the roots will have your natural texture, so most people need a root touch-up every four to six months.

Side-by-Side Comparison

  • Finish: keratin gives smooth, frizz-free hair with some natural body. Smoothing gives straight, sleek hair.
  • How long it lasts: keratin lasts about three to five months and washes out gradually. Smoothing lasts on treated hair until it is cut off; roots need touch-ups.
  • Effect on hair health: keratin is generally gentler and can make damaged hair feel healthier. Smoothing is a chemical process that weakens hair if overdone.
  • Best for: keratin suits frizzy, dry, coloured or damaged hair. Smoothing suits healthy, virgin or lightly wavy hair where you want a straighter look.
  • Time in the salon: both take roughly two to four hours, depending on hair length and thickness.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose keratin if your main problem is frizz, dryness and difficult styling, if your hair is coloured or bleached, or if you like some volume and wave. It is also the better option if you are unsure, because it wears off rather than permanently changing your hair.

Choose smoothing if your hair is healthy and you want a straight, sleek look that needs very little daily styling. Avoid smoothing if your hair is heavily bleached, already damaged or breaking, because the chemicals can push it past its limit.

A good stylist will check the strength and elasticity of your hair before recommending either treatment. If your hair snaps easily when gently stretched, it needs care and conditioning first, not another chemical process.

A Note on Formaldehyde

Some older keratin formulas released formaldehyde when heated, which irritates the eyes, nose and throat. Ask your salon which product they use and whether it is formaldehyde-free, and make sure the room is well ventilated during the treatment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is best to postpone any chemical hair treatment and discuss it with your doctor.

Aftercare That Makes Results Last

  • Wait before the first wash. Most formulas ask you to wait 48 to 72 hours; follow the exact advice your stylist gives for the product used.
  • During those first days, avoid tying your hair, using clips or tucking it behind your ears, which can leave kinks.
  • Use a sulfate-free, salt-free shampoo and conditioner. Sulfates strip the treatment and shorten its life.
  • Apply a heat protectant before blow-drying or straightening, and keep the iron below 180°C.
  • Avoid swimming pools and seawater, or rinse and condition immediately after.
  • Book a deep-conditioning hair spa every four to six weeks to keep hair soft and strong.

What Does It Cost?

In smaller cities like Shajapur, keratin treatments typically start from around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 for shoulder-length hair, while smoothing starts from a similar range. The final price depends on the length and thickness of your hair and the product brand. At our hair studio, keratin starts from ₹3,500, and we confirm the exact price after checking your hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash my hair right after a keratin treatment?

Usually not. Most formulas need 48 to 72 hours before the first wash so the treatment can set. Some newer formulas allow washing after 24 hours. Always follow your stylist's advice for the product used.

Can I colour my hair after smoothing or keratin?

Yes, but wait about two weeks. Ideally, colour your hair before a keratin treatment, because keratin seals the cuticle and can make colour take less evenly afterwards.

Is rebonding the same as smoothing?

They work in a similar way, but rebonding uses stronger chemicals and gives a completely straight, flat finish. Smoothing is gentler and looks more natural.
