Before and After a Facial: A Practical Skin Care Guide for Better Results
A good facial deep-cleans your pores, removes dead skin and leaves your face soft and bright. But a facial lasts an hour, while your skin care routine runs every day. The habits you follow before and after your appointment make a big difference to how your skin reacts and how long the results last. Here is the advice we give clients at our skin studio, whether they are booking a clean-up, a HydraFacial or a pre-bridal facial.
Choosing the Right Facial
Not every facial suits every skin. A basic clean-up removes dirt, blackheads and dead skin and is a good monthly routine for most people. A hydrating facial, including HydraFacial-style treatments, focuses on gentle exfoliation, extraction and deep moisture, and suits dull, dehydrated and normal-to-combination skin. Acne-focused facials use ingredients like salicylic acid to clear clogged pores, while brightening facials target uneven tone and dullness.
If you have active, painful acne, rosacea, eczema or a skin infection, see a dermatologist before booking. Some facial steps, such as steaming, scrubbing and extraction, can make these conditions worse.
Three to Five Days Before Your Facial
- Stop retinol, retinoids and strong exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, glycolic, salicylic), because they make your skin more sensitive to the facial's exfoliation.
- Avoid scrubs and face masks with active ingredients.
- Do not wax, thread or bleach your face for at least 48 hours before. Freshly waxed skin can react strongly to facial products.
- Avoid getting sunburnt or heavily tanned.
- If you take prescription medicine for your skin, tell your therapist. Some, like isotretinoin, mean you should not have a facial at all for a while.
On the Day
Arrive with clean skin if you can, or at least without heavy makeup. Tell your therapist about any allergies, new products you have started, recent treatments and anything that has irritated your skin before. A good therapist will look at your skin under a magnifying lamp and adjust the products to suit it, rather than using the same routine on everyone.
The First 24 to 48 Hours After
Right after a facial, your pores are clean and your skin absorbs products easily, which is great, but it also means your skin is more reactive than usual. Some redness, especially after extractions, is normal and should settle within a few hours.
- Avoid makeup for at least 6 to 12 hours, and ideally until the next day, so freshly cleaned pores do not clog.
- Do not wash your face with harsh soap or a strong cleanser on the same day. Splash with water if you need to.
- Skip the gym, sauna, steam room and swimming pool for 24 hours. Sweat and chlorine irritate freshly treated skin.
- Do not pick at any small bumps. A few tiny breakouts in the first day or two can happen as pores purge.
- Hold off on retinol, acids and scrubs for another three to five days.
Sun Protection Is Not Optional
Exfoliation removes the top layer of dead cells, which leaves fresh skin more vulnerable to UV damage and pigmentation. In Indian summers, this can lead to dark patches that take months to fade. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 to 50 every morning, and reapply every two to three hours if you are outdoors. Wear a cap or carry an umbrella when you can. This is true every day, not only after a facial.
A Simple Daily Routine to Keep the Glow
- Morning: gentle cleanser, a light moisturiser, and sunscreen.
- Evening: cleanse to remove sunscreen, dust and makeup, then moisturise.
- Two to three times a week: an exfoliating product suited to your skin type, once your skin has fully settled after the facial.
- Daily: drink enough water, sleep well and change your pillowcase often.
You do not need ten products. A consistent, simple routine beats an expensive one used occasionally.
How Often Should You Get a Facial?
Skin renews itself roughly every four weeks, so a facial every four to six weeks works well for most people. If you are preparing for a wedding or event, plan a series of facials in the months before, and schedule the last one five to seven days before the big day so any redness has settled. Our pre-bridal timeline has a full countdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear makeup right after a facial?
It is best to wait until the next day, or at least 6 to 12 hours, so your freshly cleaned pores do not clog.
Why did I break out after my facial?
A few small spots in the first day or two can happen as clogged pores come to the surface. If you get many painful spots, a rash or a burning feeling, a product may not suit you; tell your therapist and see a dermatologist if it continues.
Is a facial safe during pregnancy?
Gentle, hydrating facials are usually fine, but tell your therapist so they can avoid strong acids, retinoids and some electrical treatments. Check with your doctor if you are unsure.
